How much does it cost to get an insurance license in Hawaii?
Last updated
Getting a Hawaii Life or Accident and Health producer license takes three payments: the exam, fingerprints and the license fee. The exam and the license fee are printed by Pearson VUE and the Insurance Division. The fingerprint fee is set by the vendor when you book. Here is each one and where the number comes from.
The fees
| Item | Cost | Paid to | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Life or Accident and Health exam | $75 per exam | Pearson VUE, when you book | Candidate handbook [1] |
| Fingerprints | Shown when you book; includes state and federal submission fees | Fieldprint | Insurance Division [2] |
| Resident producer license, initial fee | $150 | Insurance Division | Fee schedule [3] |
| Resident producer license, renewal | $100 | Insurance Division | Fee schedule [3] |
The fee schedule's amounts rest on HRS 431:7-101, which sets $50 to issue a regular resident producer license and $50 per year for all services after issuance, including extension of the license. [4]
What it adds up to
For one line passed on the first try: $75 exam plus the $150 initial fee is $225, plus the Fieldprint fee. [1] [3] Life and Accident and Health are separate exams, and the handbook prints the $75 fee per examination. [1]
The steps, in order
The Insurance Division lists the steps for a new resident license: [2]
- Pass the exam. The Division receives your score electronically.
- Get fingerprinted. Book online with Fieldprint and enter the code HI-DCCA-INS so the result goes to the Insurance Division.
- Apply through NIPR and pay the licensing fee within 60 days of the date you were fingerprinted.
Retakes
The handbook lists no retake discount: the $75 examination fee is paid at the time of reservation. [1] At a test center you can retest 24 hours after a failed attempt. On OnVUE, the first retest after a failed online attempt requires a two week wait, and later OnVUE retests require four weeks. [1] Under Hawaii law, the commissioner may require a wait of up to six months for someone who has failed two previous, similar exams. [6]
Fees that are easy to miss
- Nonrefundable. Exam fees are non-refundable and non-transferable, except under the change and cancel policy. [1] Under HRS 431:7-101, "All fees and penalties are nonrefundable". [4]
- Late renewal penalty. The commissioner must send written notice at least thirty days before the extension date. A renewal fee not paid by the renewal date is increased by a penalty of double the unpaid renewal fee, and nonpayment automatically inactivates the license. [4]
- Reapplying. The fee schedule lists $300 to reapply within one year of nonrenewal, $100 within one year of a surrender, and $150 after one year of inactivation, applying as a new applicant. [3]
- Score expiration. Exam scores are valid for two years from the exam date. [5]
- The fingerprint window. The application and fee are due within 60 days of fingerprinting. [2]
Optional costs
- Pre-licensing education. The handbook says Hawaii does not require a specific program of pre-licensing education. [1]
- Practice tests. Pearson offers online insurance practice tests for $19.95. [7] Our free Hawaii life insurance practice test and free Hawaii accident and health practice test cost nothing.
