How to get a life and health insurance license in South Carolina
Last updated
The steps to become a licensed life or accident and health insurance producer in South Carolina, from Pearson VUE's South Carolina candidate handbook and the South Carolina Code.
The steps
- Study for the exam. Each exam has 50 general questions and 25 on South Carolina law. South Carolina's producer licensing law (S.C. Code Title 38, Chapter 43) does not list a pre-licensing course. See the exam guide.
- Schedule and pass the exam with Pearson VUE. Book online or call (877) 759-5226. The fee is $59 per exam. You do not need approval from the state to take the exam.
- Get fingerprinted. S.C. Code 38-43-100(F) requires fingerprints for state (SLED) and FBI criminal history checks, and says the cost is paid by the applicant.
- Apply for the license. The handbook says a license application can be made 48 hours (2 days) after passing an exam. The initial producer license fee is $25 (S.C. Code 38-43-80).

Good to know
- Your passing result is valid for one year, according to the handbook.
- Retakes: you can retake 24 hours after your last attempt with a new fee, up to six times in a one-year period.
- Pass both parts: if you pass the general part and fail the state part (or the other way around), you retake the entire exam.
- Moving to South Carolina: the handbook says new residents may take the South Carolina exams at any Pearson VUE test center nationwide before moving.
