How to get a life and health insurance license in Massachusetts
Last updated
The steps to become a licensed life or accident and health insurance producer in Massachusetts, from the Division of Insurance, Pearson VUE and NIPR.
The steps
- Study for the exam. Each exam has 50 general questions and 30 on Massachusetts law. The Division's licensing table for resident Life and Accident and Health applicants says "Exam required"; it does not list a pre-licensing course. See the exam guide.
- Schedule and pass the exam with Pearson VUE. Book online or call (888) 674-1558. The fee is $37 per exam, and you test in person at a Pearson test center.
- Apply for the license through NIPR. The Division says to "Apply for an insurance license through NIPR." The handbook says to submit "any required documentation and fees." If you answer "Yes" to a background question, the Division lists documents to upload.
- Track your application through the state's SBS system, as the Division describes.

- Your exam score is valid for 12 months for applying, according to NIPR.
- One license, added lines: Massachusetts issues one producer license, and you add lines of authority such as Life and Accident and Health or Sickness.
- Continuing education: 60 credits including 3 in ethics for the first renewal, then 45 credits for each later three-year renewal.
- Moving to Massachusetts with a license from another state: NIPR says licensees have 90 days to update their license "without needing to take the Massachusetts exams."
