Hawaii nonresident insurance producer license

Last updated

A nonresident license lets a producer whose home state is elsewhere sell in Hawaii. Nonresident licensing is on the Hawaii exam as well: the licensing part of Section I lists "Nonresident" with HRS 431:9A-108. [1] Here is what the law and the Insurance Division say.

The four conditions (HRS 431:9A-108)

Except as provided in 431:9A-112, a nonresident applicant receives a nonresident producer license if: [2]

  1. they are currently licensed, and in good standing, as a resident producer in their home state;
  2. they have submitted the proper request for licensure and paid the fees required by 431:7-101;
  3. they have submitted the application they filed in their home state, or a completed uniform application instead; and
  4. their home state gives nonresident producer licenses to Hawaii residents on the same basis.

The commissioner may verify the producer's licensing status through the national producer database. [2]

Fees

The Division's fee schedule for a nonresident producer: [3]

ItemFee
Initial$225
Renewal$150
Reapply within one year of nonrenewal$450
Reapply within one year of surrender$150
Reapply after one year of inactivation$225, applying as a new applicant

Under HRS 431:7-101, all fees and penalties are nonrefundable, and a renewal fee not paid by the renewal date is increased by a penalty of double the unpaid fee. [4]

Moving states

Converting a nonresident license to resident

If you hold an active Hawaii nonresident license and move to Hawaii, the Division asks you to mail: [5]

The license keeps its existing expiration date after conversion, even if renewal is close. [5] The law also exempts a producer moving to Hawaii from prelicensing education and the exam for lines held in the prior state, if they apply within ninety days of establishing legal residence, unless the commissioner provides otherwise by rule. [6]
