How hard is the Massachusetts life insurance exam?
Last updated
"Hard" depends on how you prepare, but the official documents show exactly what you are up against. Here is what Pearson VUE publishes about the Massachusetts Life Producer exam, and what each fact means for your study plan.
Fact 1: it is two exams in one
The Life Producer exam has a general knowledge part and a Massachusetts part. [1]
| Part | Scored | Pretest |
|---|---|---|
| Life general knowledge | 50 | 5 |
| Massachusetts specific | 30 | 5 |
| Total | 80 | 10 |
The totals are the sum of the printed counts. More than a third of the scored questions (30 of 80) are on Massachusetts laws and regulations. [1] General life knowledge alone will not carry you.
Fact 2: the state part is law, not concepts
The Massachusetts part has two sections of 15 questions each: [1]
- Section I: Massachusetts laws and rules pertinent to all lines of insurance. It covers licensing (the process, types of licenses, renewal, address changes, reporting of actions, assumed names, continuing education) and disciplinary actions, among other topics.
- Section II: Massachusetts laws and regulations pertinent to life insurance.
These questions cite specific sections of the General Laws, such as chapter 175, sections 162G to 162X for licensing. [1] Study the rules in those sections, not just the general ideas.
Fact 3: the general part spreads across four areas
The general knowledge part is split into four sections: [1]
| Section | Questions |
|---|---|
| I. Types of policies | 15 |
| II. Policy riders, provisions, options, and exclusions | 15 |
| III. Completing the application, underwriting, and delivering the policy | 12 |
| IV. Retirement and other insurance concepts | 8 |
Sections I and II together are 30 of the 50 general questions. Those are where most of your general study time should go.
Fact 4: some questions do not count, and you cannot tell which
The exam includes pretest questions that are not scored. The handbook says they are spread through the exam and not identified separately from scored questions. [2] Treat every question as if it counts.
Fact 5: the score is scaled
There are several versions of the exam, called forms, and their difficulty can vary slightly. Pearson uses a statistical method called equating so no one is helped or hurt by the form they get, and reports scores on a common scale. The Division set the passing score at 70 on that scale, with Pearson. [2] A scaled 70 is not the same as 70% correct. If you pass, the scaled score on your report is neither the number nor the percentage of questions you answered correctly. [2]
Fact 6: a fail tells you where to work
You get a pass or fail report before you leave the test center. If you fail, the report includes a numeric score and diagnostic information. [2] To retake, you reapply and pay another exam fee, and reexamination fees are non-refundable. [2] The exam fee is $37. [2]
So, how hard is it?
By the numbers, three things deserve the most attention: the 30 Massachusetts law questions, the 30 questions on policy types and provisions, and pretest questions you cannot tell apart from scored ones. Plan for all three.
