Idaho insurance continuing education requirements

Last updated

Once you hold an Idaho producer license, continuing education (CE) keeps it in force. Idaho Code requires a CE statement with every license continuation, and the Department of Insurance's rule IDAPA 18.06.04 sets the hours and the standards. [1] [2] This page explains the rules, using the official Idaho Code and the Idaho Administrative Code.

The basic requirement

How credit is counted

What qualifies and what does not

Acceptable subjects for producers include insurance, fixed and indexed annuities and risk management; insurance laws and rules; mathematics, statistics and probability; economics; business law; finance; taxes, trusts and estate planning; business management; and securities. [2] Programs that do not qualify include any course used to prepare for an insurance licensing exam, computer science, motivation, psychology or selling skills, and reviews, quizzes or exams. [2] So exam prep, including ours, does not count as CE.

Exceptions and extensions

Exceptions include licensees on extended active duty with the Armed Forces and holders of a temporary license. The advisory committee or the director may also approve an exception or extension for an extraordinary situation, if the licensee asks in writing before the renewal date. [2]

Renewal and late compliance (Idaho Code 41-1013)

A license continues in force if the continuation fee is paid by the expiration date with a written request and a CE statement. A renewal is not complete without both the fee and the completed CE statement, and a license without them expires at midnight on the expiration date. [1] Failing to meet CE by the expiration date is grounds for the director to refuse to continue the license. A licensee may reinstate within ninety days of expiration by submitting proof of all education and an added administrative penalty. After ninety days and up to one year, the person must complete all licensing requirements again, including retesting, a new application and new fees. [1]

Inactive status (Idaho Code 41-1028)

A producer who does not want to stay active may apply for inactive status. While inactive, the producer cannot transact insurance but is exempt from CE. To reactivate, the producer must show twenty hours of CE earned in the twelve months before reactivation, or retest. [3]
