How much does it cost to get an insurance license in Idaho?
Last updated
Getting an Idaho Life or Accident and Health producer license comes down to four payments: the exam, fingerprint processing, the license application and NIPR's transaction fee when you apply. For one line, passed on the first try with electronic fingerprints, that is $215.60. Here is where each number comes from.
The fees
| Item | Cost | Paid to | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Life or Accident and Health exam | $65 per exam | Pearson VUE, when you book | Handbook [1]; Department testing page [2] |
| Fingerprints, electronic | $65 processing fee, non-refundable | Pearson VUE, when you book | Department testing page [2]; Handbook [1] |
| Producer license, original application | $80 per application | Department of Insurance | IDAPA 18.01.02.030.01 [3]; NIPR Idaho page [7] |
| NIPR transaction fee when you apply | $5.60 | NIPR | NIPR [8] |
| Producer license renewal (every 2 years) | $80, or $60 if renewed electronically | Department of Insurance | IDAPA 18.01.02.030.04 [3] |
Idaho's fee rule caps fingerprinting at $80 ("not to exceed eighty dollars"). [3]
Hard card instead of electronic prints. You can have prints taken on a hard card at any law enforcement office and pay Pearson VUE's non-refundable processing fee when you book that appointment. The Department says you also pay the office to take the prints, plus postage and any reprints, and suggests calling ahead to ask about the office's fees. With electronic prints you pay only the Pearson VUE fee. [2][9]
What it adds up to
Method: add the required fees from the table, with electronic fingerprints.
| Situation | Exam | Fingerprints | Application | NIPR fee | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Life only | $65 | $65 | $80 | $5.60 | $215.60 |
| Life and Accident and Health, one application | $65 + $65 | $65 | $80 | $5.60 | $280.60 |
One $80 fee covers both lines. NIPR's Idaho page says "All fees are charged per application" and lists the Insurance Producer fee as $80. It also says "Idaho does not charge a fee to amend an existing license," so adding a line later carries no state fee. [7]
Retakes cost the full exam fee
The handbook prices every Idaho exam at $65 with the footnote "Price for State, General, or Combo." [1] Each exam has a general section and a state section, and if you fail one you retake only that part. [1] Even so, a retake of just one part is still $65. So:
- Pass Life on the second try: $65 x 2 + $65 + $80 + $5.60 = $280.60 with electronic prints.
- You can retake 24 hours after your last attempt, and there is no limit on attempts. Each attempt is another $65. [1]
Fees that are easy to miss
- Fingerprints expire. The handbook says fingerprints are valid for six months. If you wait too long, expect to pay processing again. [1]
- Results expire. Passing results are valid for 180 days, and Idaho Code 41-1006(4) says applications not received within 180 days of passing "shall be denied." Missing that window means paying for the exam again. [1][4]
- Fees are non-refundable. The Department's fee rule says "All fees and miscellaneous charges are non-refundable except as noted," and the fingerprint fees are marked non-refundable. [2][3]
- Payment method. Exam fees are paid when you book, by credit card, debit card or voucher, and are not accepted at the test center. [1]
Optional costs
- Practice tests. Pearson sells online insurance practice tests for $19.95. [5] Our free Idaho Life practice test and free Idaho Accident & Health practice test cost nothing.
- Pre-licensing education. The handbook and the Department's application guide list no education step, and Idaho Code 41-1007 lists the findings for a resident license without one. [1][6]
