Idaho Medicare and social insurance practice questions
Last updated
Section III of the Idaho Accident and Health exam's general part, Social Insurance, has 6 of the 50 general questions. It covers Medicare (Parts A through D), Medicaid and Social Security benefits. [1] Medicare supplement insurance also appears in section I and in the Idaho law part of the exam. [1] This page explains these programs with official federal and Idaho sources, then gives 10 practice questions.
Who gets Medicare
Medicare is health insurance for people 65 or older, people under 65 with certain disabilities, and people of any age with End-Stage Renal Disease. [2] Medicare.gov adds that people may qualify earlier with a disability, ESRD or ALS. [3]
The parts of Medicare
- Part A (Hospital Insurance): helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care and home health care. [4]
- Part B (Medical Insurance): covers services from doctors and other providers, outpatient care, durable medical equipment and many preventive services. [4]
- Part C (Medicare Advantage): "an alternative to Original Medicare for your health and drug needs," offered by Medicare approved private companies, and it may include extra benefits. [4] [2]
- Part D (drug coverage): "helps cover the cost of prescription drugs," and is run by Medicare approved private insurers. [4]
The Idaho Department of Insurance's SHIBA program has Medicare counselors who meet in person, by phone or by email, and a Medicare Help Line at 1-800-247-4422. [5]
Medicare supplement rules in Idaho
- An outline of coverage must be delivered to the applicant when the application is made. [6]
- The policy must carry a notice on its first page giving the right to return it within thirty days of delivery for a premium refund if the buyer is not satisfied for any reason. [7]
- The Medicare supplement chapter does not apply to plans of employers or labor organizations for their employees, former employees, members or former members. [8]
Medicaid and long term care
The Department explains that Medicare "does not pay for most long-term care," and that Medicaid may offer some coverage, with eligibility depending on assets. [9] Under Idaho's Partnership Program, a person who owns a qualifying long term care policy has assets equal to the benefits paid disregarded when Medicaid eligibility for long term care is figured. For example, a policy that paid $50,000 lets $50,000 of assets be disregarded. [9]
Social Security disability
The Social Security Administration says you qualify only if you cannot do the work you did before or adjust to other work because of your medical condition, and the condition has lasted or is expected to last at least one year or to result in death. There is a five month waiting period. [10] Idaho law voids any disability insurance provision that reduces benefits during a benefit period because Social Security benefits increase. [11]
