Massachusetts insurance license renewal
Last updated
Renewal is on the Massachusetts exam, not just something to handle later. The Massachusetts part of the outline lists reinstatement and renewal (chapter 175, section 162M(b) to (d)), address change (162M(f)), reporting of actions (162V) and continuing education (177E; 211 CMR 50.00). [1] Here is what the law and the Division of Insurance say.
How long a license stays in effect
A Massachusetts producer license stays in effect, unless revoked or suspended, as long as the fee in section 14 is paid and resident producers meet their education requirements by the due date. [2] The Division issues one producer license, and lines of authority are added to it. [3]
The term and the fee
The Division's license terms and fees chart lists: [4]
| License | Term | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Producer | 3 years | $225 |
| Producer with property and casualty or personal lines | 3 years | $300 |
| Reinstating producer | 3 years | $450 or $525, depending on lines of authority |
Continuing education
The Division's page lists the CE for resident producers: 60 credits, including 3 in ethics, for the first renewal, then 45 credits, including 3 in ethics, for each later three-year renewal. [3] Not finishing CE before renewal may lead to non-renewal and to penalties beyond the late renewal fee. [3] Our Massachusetts continuing education page covers the rules in 177E.
If the license lapses
An individual producer who lets the license lapse may reinstate the same license within 12 months from the due date of the renewal fee without passing a written exam. A penalty of double the unpaid renewal fee applies to any renewal fee received after the due date. [2]
A producer who cannot follow renewal procedures because of military service or another extenuating circumstance may ask for a waiver of those procedures, and of any exam requirement, fine or sanction for not following them. [2]
Changes you must report
- Address: tell the commissioner of a change of address within 30 days, by any means the commissioner accepts. [2]
- Actions against you: report any administrative action in another jurisdiction, or by another agency in Massachusetts, within 30 days of the final disposition, and any criminal prosecution within 30 days of the initial pretrial hearing date. [5]
Checking your license
The Division's page says you can view your license status, expiration date and other licensing information through the State Based Systems (SBS) License Manager. [3]
