Massachusetts nonresident insurance producer license

Last updated

A nonresident license lets a producer whose home state is elsewhere sell in Massachusetts. It is also exam material: the Massachusetts part of the Life and the Accident and Health exams lists nonresident producers, citing chapter 175, sections 162N and 162U. [1] Here is what those sections and the Division of Insurance say.

The four conditions (section 162N)

Unless the applicant is denied under section 162R, a nonresident receives a nonresident producer license if: [2]

  1. they are currently licensed as a resident, and in good standing, in their home state;
  2. they have submitted the proper request for licensure and paid the fees in section 14;
  3. they have submitted the application they filed in their home state, or a completed uniform application instead; and
  4. their home state gives nonresident producer licenses to Massachusetts residents on the same basis.

The commissioner may check the producer's licensing status through the national producer database. [2]

The reciprocity waiver (section 162U)

The commissioner must waive any other requirements for a nonresident applicant with a valid home state license, except the section 162N requirements, if the home state gives Massachusetts residents nonresident licenses on the same basis. [3]

Continuing education

A nonresident producer who meets their home state's continuing education requirements has met the Massachusetts requirements, if the home state treats Massachusetts producers the same way. [3]

Moving

Fees and term

The Division's license terms and fees chart lists the producer license with a 3 year term and a $225 fee, or $300 with property and casualty or personal lines. [6] Apply through NIPR, the system the Division names for applications. [5]

Appointments

Insurers submit appointments through NIPR. All appointments expire each year on June 30 and must be renewed by the appointing company. [5]
