Pennsylvania insurance license renewal
Last updated
Renewal is part of the Pennsylvania exam too. The Insurance Regulation section lists renewal (40 P.S. 310.8), change in contact information (40 P.S. 310.11(19)) and continuing education under the heading for keeping a license. [1] Here is how renewal works under the Insurance Department Act and the Department's own pages.
What renewal requires
Section 608-A says a licensee requesting renewal sends the Department a completed renewal form, the fee, and verification that the required continuing education is done. A resident who has never submitted fingerprints to the Department must also submit them, with the fee. [2]
The term and the fees
| Item | Resident | Nonresident |
|---|---|---|
| Timely renewal | $55 | $110 |
| Lapsed license renewal | $165 | $165 |
| Additional line of authority | $25 | $25 |
| Term | 2 years | 2 years |
The Department lists these amounts and says the initial term is based on the licensee's birth month. [3] The statute sets the same renewal amounts and calls them nonrefundable. [2] The Department links Sircon and NIPR for renewing online. [3]
Continuing education
A licensee must complete 24 credit hours of approved continuing education for each two-year license period, and at least 3 of the 24 must be on ethics. Up to 24 extra hours can carry forward to the next period. [2] Our Pennsylvania continuing education page has the details.
If the license lapses
A license lapses if you do not renew on time, pay the fee or finish CE. Section 608-A(d) gives you one year from the renewal date to ask for reinstatement, with a completed renewal form, the fee and proof of CE for the lapsed periods. [2]
| When you request reinstatement | Result |
|---|---|
| Within 60 days after the lapse | Reinstated back to the lapse date |
| More than 60 days after the lapse | Reinstated from the date of reinstatement |
| More than one year after the lapse | You must reapply for the license |
The Department notes that a late renewal affects the renewal term and that there is a one-year lapsed period. [3]
Military service or other extenuating circumstances: you may ask the Department to waive the CE for the lapsed period and the lapsed license fee, with supporting documents. If there is good cause, the Department grants the waiver. [2]
Name, address and printing
- Address change: a resident submits it online or on a paper form. If the state where you live or work is changing, the change cannot be done online. [4]
- Name change: submit it online, or by paper form if needed. [4]
- Print your license: the Department has a "Print Your Existing Pennsylvania Insurance License" process, which is also how you get a duplicate. You can also print a letter of certification right away. [4]
- Letting it go: the Department says you have a property right to your license. If you inactivate it, you give that up and must start over as a new applicant. You may also let it expire by not renewing. [4]
