Pennsylvania Medicare supplement practice questions
Last updated
Section 9.0 of the Pennsylvania Accident and Health exam (Series 16-02), "Health Insurance for Senior Citizens and Special Needs Individuals," is 14% of the exam. Its Medicare supplement part lists open enrollment, marketing standards, advertising, appropriateness of a purchase, replacement, disclosure, compensation and guaranteed issue, citing 31 Pa. Code Chapter 89. [1] This page covers those rules and gives 12 practice questions. Every rule comes from the Pennsylvania Code.
Key rules
- Open enrollment (89.778): an issuer may not deny, condition or price a Medicare supplement policy differently because of health status for an application submitted before or during the 6 months that begin on the first day of the first month the person is enrolled in Medicare Part B. [2]
- Replacement credit (89.789): when one Medicare supplement policy replaces another, the replacing issuer must waive waiting, elimination, probationary and pre-existing condition periods for similar benefits to the extent the time was already spent under the old policy. If the old policy was in effect at least 6 months, the new one may not impose those periods at all for similar benefits. [3]
- One policy only (89.787): selling coverage that would give someone more than one Medicare supplement policy is prohibited. [4]
- Commissions (89.782): first-year compensation can be no more than 200% of the second-year amount, and renewal compensation must be the same as the second year for no fewer than 5 renewal years. [5]
