Hawaii insurance license renewal
Last updated
Renewal is on the Hawaii exam. The licensing part of Section I lists "Renewal of license and continuing education," citing HRS 431:9A-107(c) and 431:9A-124. [1] Here is how renewal works, what happens if you miss it, and what you must report in between. For CE hours and timing, see our Hawaii continuing education page; for every fee, see Hawaii license cost.
What keeps a license in effect
A Hawaii producer license stays in effect as long as the fee under 431:7-101 is paid and resident producers meet their education requirements on time. [2]
The renewal fee
The Division's fee schedule lists a $100 renewal fee for a resident producer and $150 for a nonresident. [3] The commissioner sends written notice at least thirty days before the extension date. [4]
CE comes first
To renew, a resident completes the required continuing education hours and pays the fees. [5] The Division's Memorandum 2022-3LIC says renewals are done online, that certificates of completion must reach the Division from the provider before the renewal fee can be paid, and that producers should finish CE no later than 15 days before the renewal due date. [6]
If you miss the date
- Unpaid fee: a fee not paid by the renewal date is increased by a penalty of double the unpaid renewal fee, and nonpayment automatically inactivates the license. [4]
- Reinstating after nonpayment: a producer whose license went inactive for nonpayment may reinstate it without an exam by paying the fee and a penalty of double the unpaid renewal fees within twelve months of the inactivation date, if they comply with chapter 431. [2]
- Missed CE: unless the commissioner granted an extension in advance, missing CE by the renewal date automatically places the license on inactive status. To reactivate, send proof of the hours and pay any fees and penalties. You need not retake the exam if you reactivate within twelve months of inactivation. [5]
- Reapplying: the fee schedule lists $300 to reapply within one year of nonrenewal, $100 within one year of surrender, and $150 after one year of inactivation as a new applicant. [3]
- Military or other circumstances: a producer who cannot follow renewal procedures because of military service or another extenuating circumstance may ask for a waiver of those procedures, and of any exam, fine or sanction. [2]
Report a change of status within thirty days
HRS 431:9A-107(f) requires a licensee to tell the commissioner of any change of status within thirty days. The law lists changes such as legal name, assumed name, trade name, business, home or mailing address, business phone, fax, email or website. Missing the deadline may result in a penalty under 431:2-203. [2]

Study tips
- Thirty days is the number for notices and changes of status; twelve months is the reinstatement window.
- Late fees double. Missed CE means inactive status, not instant revocation.
