Idaho insurance exam passing score and retake rules
Last updated
Most people searching for the Idaho insurance exam passing score want to know what it takes to pass. The Pearson VUE candidate handbook for Idaho spells out how the exam is split, what your score report shows, and how retakes work. [1] Here is what the official documents say, so you know what to expect on test day and after.
How the exam is built
Each Idaho producer exam has two parts: a general section and a state section. [1] The content outlines print the counts: [2]
| Exam | General section | Idaho section | Scored total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Life | 50 scored plus 5 pretest | 25 scored plus 6 pretest | 75 |
| Accident and Health | 50 scored plus 5 pretest | 25 scored plus 6 pretest | 75 |
The scored totals are the sum of the two printed counts. The handbook allows 120 minutes for each exam. [1]
What "passing" means in Idaho
The handbook treats the two sections separately. Candidates who pass one section and fail the other "need to retake the portion they did not pass." [1] So each section is passed or failed on its own, and you need to pass both.
Our Idaho pass rate page shows how many first time candidates passed each section in past years, according to the Department of Insurance.
Your score report
When you finish, you get a score report marked pass or fail. [1] If you fail, the report also gives a numeric score and diagnostic information for the general portion of the exam. [1] Use the diagnostics to see which general topics need work before you book again.
Retake rules
- Wait time: you can retake 24 hours after your last attempt. [1]
- Number of attempts: there is no limit. [1]
- Only the failed part: if you passed one section, you retake only the section you did not pass. [1]
- Reapply each time: Idaho Code 41-1006(3) says a person who fails, or does not show up, must reapply and pay all required fees before being scheduled again. [3]
- Fee: the handbook lists $65 per exam, with the note "Price for State, General, or Combo." [1] So a retake of one section costs the same $65.
After you pass
Passing results are valid for 180 days. [1] Idaho Code 41-1006(4) says applications for licensure not received by the Department within one hundred eighty days of passing shall be denied. [3] Plan to apply soon after your last passing section.

Study tips
- Prepare for both sections. A strong general score does not carry a weak Idaho score.
- Use the diagnostics on a failing report to target your review.
- Book your retake when you are ready, not just because 24 hours have passed. Each attempt costs $65.
Get ready for both sections with the free Idaho life insurance practice test or the free Idaho accident and health practice test.
