Idaho insurance license fingerprints
Last updated
Fingerprints are part of getting an Idaho resident producer license. The Department of Insurance says Idaho requires testing and fingerprinting for all residents who want a license, and that it partners with Pearson VUE for both. [1] Here is how the fingerprint step works.
Who needs fingerprints
- Residents: the Department requires all applicants for a resident license to submit fingerprints for a background check. [1] Idaho Code 41-1007 lists submitting fingerprints among the findings the director must make before approving a resident producer license. [2]
- Nonresidents: Idaho Code 41-1009 makes fingerprints a condition for a nonresident license only if the director requires them. [3]
- Moving to Idaho: the Department's FAQ says a producer with a resident license in another state who moves to Idaho does not need to test again, but does need to be fingerprinted. [1]
The fee
The Department lists a non-refundable processing fee of $65, paid to Pearson VUE when you schedule. [1] Idaho's fee rule caps fingerprinting at $80. [4]
Two ways to submit
Electronic fingerprints. Schedule an electronic fingerprint appointment with Pearson VUE's online reservation tool. It is listed under exams as "InsID-FPELC", and you pay the $65 fee when you book. The Department lists electronic fingerprinting at Pearson VUE locations in Boise and Pocatello, Idaho, and in Spokane Valley, Washington. [1]
Hard card fingerprints. Have your prints taken at any law enforcement office using the Department's hard card instructions, then schedule a fingerprint hard card appointment with Pearson VUE. The Department explains that this "appointment" is not an exam: it reserves a date for your mailed card to be processed. [1] Our Idaho license cost page covers the extra costs the Department mentions for hard cards.
The CHRI form and the next step
The Department says the CHRI/Request and Release form and your fingerprinting receipt must be returned to the Department as part of your application. [1] After your prints are submitted, move straight to the next step of the application. The Department cannot see, track or verify anything about your fingerprints until your application is submitted and the completed CHRI form is sent. [1]
Rules that trip people up
From the Department's FAQ: [1]
- Fingerprints taken for another purpose cannot be used.
- Fingerprints taken for an insurance license in another state cannot be used.
- You can get Idaho fingerprints done in another state, using the hard card instructions.
- You can submit fingerprints without going to a Pearson VUE location, using the hard card process.
- The handbook says fingerprints are valid for six months. [5]
Veterans
The Department's FAQ says Idaho insurance licensing exams for producer, bail and adjuster licenses are qualified for U.S. veterans to receive reimbursement through the GI Bill, and answers yes to whether the GI Bill covers testing and fingerprinting. [1]
