Idaho insurance license renewal
Last updated
License renewal is on the Idaho exam. The Idaho part of the outline lists continuing education, fees and renewal, change of address and license expiration. [1] Here is how renewal works under Idaho Code and the Department of Insurance instructions.
What keeps a license in effect
An Idaho producer license stays in effect, unless revoked or suspended, as long as the renewal fee is paid and resident producers meet their continuing education requirements. [2]
What a complete renewal needs (Idaho Code 41-1013)
A license continues in force if, by the expiration date, the licensee sends the continuation fee with a written request for continuation and a continuing education statement verifying the CE is done. A renewal is not complete unless it has both the fee and the completed CE statement. [3]
- If no request, fee and CE statement arrive on time, the license expires at midnight on the expiration date. [3]
- Continuation fees are earned when paid and are not refunded, except duplicate payments. [3]
The fee and the CE
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Producer renewal (biennial) | $80, or $60 if renewed electronically |
| Continuing education | 24 hours every two years, including at least 3 ethics hours |
The fee is from Idaho's fee rule. [4] The CE requirement is from the Department's continuing education rule. [5] Our Idaho continuing education page covers what counts.
How to renew
The Department's instructions say: [6]
- Renewals are done through NIPR.
- Licenses are renewed as is. No changes can be made during renewal, and all lines currently on the Idaho license must be selected.
- Residents cannot submit a renewal until their CE is complete and recorded in NIPR.
- All fees are non-refundable.
If you miss the date
- Lapsed for the fee: a producer who lets the license lapse may reinstate it within twelve months from the renewal fee due date without passing an exam, unless a retest is required under 41-1013(7). A penalty of double the unpaid renewal fee applies to any renewal fee received after the due date. [2]
- Missed CE: failing to meet CE by the expiration date is grounds to refuse continuation. The licensee may reinstate within ninety days of expiration by submitting proof of all education requirements and an additional administrative penalty. From the ninetieth day up to one year from nonrenewal, the person must complete all licensing requirements again, including retesting, a new application and new fees, and show the CE for the period in which the license ended. After one year or more, the person reapplies and retests as a new applicant. [3]
- Military or medical: a producer who cannot follow renewal procedures because of military service or another extenuating circumstance, such as a long-term medical disability, may ask the director to waive them. [2]
Address changes
Tell the director of a change of address within thirty days, by any means the director accepts. [2]

- Renewal needs fee plus CE statement. Missing either means it is not complete.
